For an artist, creating is like breathing. My mind is always looking for the moment, the event to translate into an image on canvas with my own interpretation. It is not easy these days to create when chaos prevails. It is a terrible feeling, being powerless, when the world around you is falling apart. So much is to be done. On the other side, when one crosses an attitude, a gesture, an expression of beauty, among this ocean of ugliness, it becomes an island to reach, has the value of a gold mine. It gives birth to the work of art. In my case, I have a tendency not to fantasize. Returning to reality is worse to accept. I aim at reachable dreams. I imagine the possible. I paint portraits of real people. It is my link to the people around me. I dont
paint as much as I want to. I have done a lot of teaching lately.
Too much teaching. It drains you. But my students success in
professional life or in colleges or universities is such a reward.
I keep postponing the reduction of my teaching time. I cant understand that the " Art Capital of the Caribbean" is the only place where art stagnates, repeats itself "ad vitam eternam". There is a need for an active cultural life in Haiti. The art market crumbled. Not a voice was heard to study the reasons why and make people aware of the necessity of preserving our " memory as a people". But...as long as there is life, there is hope. Return to |
