represented in this painting: When the unity of command was guaranteed, it became necessary to move forward with the war against the French. Petion and Dessalines decided to bring together the officers of the Western army in Arcahaie and decided to create a special flag for the indigenous army. For the uneducated mass of blacks the French flag represented the union of the three social groups of the colony: the whites, the mulattoes and the blacks. In one swift move, Dessalines ripped up the white. The Haitian Flag was created. It was two strips of blue and red cloth placed vertically with a palm tree next to a military trophee. After the independence Dessalines and Christophe replaced the blue by a black strip of cloth. Later Petion re established the blue strip and put them horizontally. Hero
(Histoire d'Haiti par J-C Dorsainville page 127, edition Henri Deschamps) Return to Represented Painting Return to |
