After the Proclamation of Independence, the people told Dessalines that the title of General Governor of the island was inappropriate for the new independent nation. On August 8, 1804 the news reached Haiti that Napoleon was the French Emperor under the name Napoleon the First. (May 18) Dessalines finally let his assistants convince him.

A petition for the establishment of a Haitian Empire was written in Marchand and taken to all the military divisions and given to all the officers to sign. It was still being distributed when Dessalines rushing things had his guard of honor proclaim him Emperor. It was his devoted half brigade (September 22).

The crowning ceremony took place in Cap on October 6, 1804 and was brilliant. Father Corneille Brelle consecrated Dessalines Emperor under the name Jacques the First.

The new Emperor was elected but as a special privilege, Jacques the First could choose his successor. His wife, Claire Heureuse, born Guillaume is a remembered as a very good and charitable person who had the title of emperor's wife.
