represented in this painting: Vertierres - La Butte Charrier On
November 18, at 4:00 oclock in the morning, the reveille sounds
in the French camp, and suddenly, General Clerveaux opens fire on Fort
Breda. The early light of dawn falls on an active battle. Christophe and Romain, having taken dEstaing's position, settle a battery there and bomb Cap-Haitien. Capois has just begun his maneuver when a contrordre stops him. Dessalines wants to prevent the concentration of the fire of the forts on a single point of impact on the battlefield. He orders Clerveaux to go around Breda, and Capois to take over Butte Charrier situated next to Vertieres and on a higher level. From Vertieres you can look over the road and bridge that you have to cross to reach Charrier. Capois sets off with his devoted 9th half brigade. Struck by a hail of bullets, the soldiers jumped forward. Capois, on horseback, leads his brigade with his usual courage when a cannonball hits his hat: "Forward! Forward! " He shouts anyway. A second cannonball strikes his horse. The intrepid Capois, gets up quickly, brandishes his sword and to the repeated shouts of "forward! Forward! " springs once more, leading his men. Such astounding bravery moves Rochambeaus men. They applaud. A roll of drum is hears. Fire ceases. A hussar comes out of Vertieres, heads toward the indigenous troops. "Captain Rochambeau, he says, expresses his admiration to the officer who just covered himself with such glory". He then leaves, and the battle resumes. Hero
represented in this painting: Vertierres - La Butte Charrier.
