Since November 1802, Dessalines, the indefatigable Dessalines had always been very actively moving on horseback at the most dangerous points of the battlefield.

Dessalines had communicated his war fervor to the natives everywhere. He tried to fight off Rochambeau’s tyranny. The circumstances were of the most favorable. More reduced everyday, the French army became scattered in a few rare cities of the country.

Depuis novembre 1802, Dessalines, infatigable, toujours a cheval, toujours au point le plus menace, avait deploye une activite extraordinaire.

Partout Dessalines avait communique aux indigenes l'ardeur guerriere qui l'animait; partout on voulait abattre la tyranie de Rochambeau. Les circonstances etaient des plus favorables. De plus en plus reduite, l'armee francaise disseminee dans quelques rares villes de la cote.
